Office of the Governor: Governor approves Kaua‘i’s re-entry into Safe Travels for Trans-Pacific travelers Gov. David Ige has approved Kaua‘i Mayor Derek Kawakami’s request to rejoin the Safe Travels pre-travel testing program for Trans-Pacific travel, effective April 5, 2021. Governor’s Office: HB 1278/Act 1 Reduces Employer Unemployment Contributions At an afternoon news conference Governor David Ige signed House Bill 1278 which relates to the Unemployment Insurance Contribution Schedule for businesses and non-profit organizations. Before the COVID-19 pandemic the Unemployment Compensation Trust Fund had a half billion- dollar reserve. (Special Saturday Edition) Department of Health: Higher Case Count Today Partially Due to Historic Cases The DOH Disease Outbreak and Control Division (DOCD) is reporting 106 coronavirus cases today. 31 cases from Maui were not previously confirmed due to a laboratory reporting issue. These cases occurred between Nov. 29, 2020 and Feb. 18, 2021. These cases are not included in the current 7-day averages. DOCD is receiving new electronic test results from a Maui testing site, resulting in approximately 16,500 newly reported historic negative results from November to now, included in Maui and statewide testing counts. Department of Health: State Laboratory Finds New Variant DOH’s State Laboratories Division (SLD) confirms the presence of a new COVID variant in Hawai‘i. The P.2 variant, which contains the E484K mutation, was identified through surveillance testing conducted on O‘ahu. While the implications of this additional strain are unknown at this time, the P.2 variant is closely watched because two individuals in Brazil who were previously infected with COVID were reinfected with the P.2 variant.
